Genre: Romance, family
Director: Baek Ho Min
Screenwriter: Im Sung Han
Episodes: 50
Broadcast network: MBC, Saturday & Sunday 21:45
Broadcast period: 2009-Sept-05

Synopsis
The four siblings in the Gung family were named after precious jewels: eldest daughter Bi Chwi (Jade), eldest son San Ho (Coral), second daughter Ryu Bi (Ruby), and the youngest son, Ho Bak (Amber). Like an assortment of beautiful gems, their colours may clash and their sharp edges chip away at each other. Using an analogy of a bowl of rice with assorted ingredients to illustrate the workings of a family, the key to a great dish is using the right balance of ingredients in order to create a good mixture. Assorted Gems tells the story of the different lives of the family members and how they learn from their clashes to find the perfect balance.

I wouldn’t have minded an extra 10 episodes just to actually be able to wrap things up.

I was finding reviews and such about this drama and came across here. It is a good family drama and I really liked it. The ending may not be what we wanted it to be but it didn’t end THAT terribly. It is still worth watching. Still VERY worth watching.

    Spoiler alert.
I enjoyed this drama almost all the way thru, up until the ending it sucked, i can’t belive that the story ended like that Ruby did not end up with Kyle WTF?????, and the mother in law (Tae RI) died before the wedding froma a heart stroke, she never showed any symptoms of heart disease before, and whats up with Keut Soon not marring Ho Bak and shows up at the end pregnant buy some other dud, ????? What a bunch of crap. I am really pissed, I was enjoying so much this drama to have it end like that. I don’t know why they just didn’t gett some good writers and had a decent ending.

    @DM

WARNING!!! My comment contains plot points, so if you don’t want to know parts of the ending, DON’T READ!!!

DM, I completely agree with you. I started out really liking this cute and quirky show, but by the last leg of it I was sooooooooo irritated. I just got through watching it, and the ending made me so angry I googled “Assorted Gems Finale” to see if anyone had a similar reaction…I cannot BELIEVE Ruby ends up with that cowardly spineless JERK, Goodson and Amber’s final storyline was so terrible, the Mom kicks it on the Wedding Day (really, REALLY!?!) Jade is not supposed to write anymore (because following your dreams in life are not as important as taking care of your husband; apparently it is impossible to do both,) and everybody has a crying contest.
My other big complaint is the show’s hypocrisy concerning animals. I really liked that Amber and Coral wore t-shirts that promoted the idea of ending animal cruelty, so I was really shocked and angry at episode 21–Heja gave Younggook and Kyle some herbal medicine made with bear bile(WTF!!!). I kept waiting for at least one person to say how WRONG and EVIL that is, synthetic UCDA is safer and works better, and that extracting UCDA from bears is animal-cruelty, but no one said anything! That made me worry that people watching will think that bear bile “farming” is ok and necessary, when it is most definitely NEITHER.

So again, after my long rant, totally agree with DM.

Okay, my comments are all back now. Was it a technical glitch? I wonder…

Anyway, don’t waste your time and energy on this drama. You will be seriously disappointed. If you doubt me, watch the last episode first, then watch the first few and judge for yourself if they have anything at all to do with each other. (Hint: They don’t, and you’ll think you’re watching two completely different dramas.) How can you start out with a light family comedy and end up with a crappy and depressing makjang ending?

I left a comment saying why this drama wasn’t worth watching, but they removed it. Seems like we can say whatever we want here–as long as it’s only good things. Don’t trust the rating here. They’re being managed! :(

I said “no” it’s not good to watch, because the final 10+ episodes and the ending were really bad…but someone removed my post. Seems like we can say anything we like–as long as it’s all good. :P

    Don’t trust the ratings here!

If you haven’t started watching this drama yet, don’t bother. It starts out okay, makes it through to about episode 35 more or less okay, and then the storyline falls almost completely apart. To top that off, they stick you with a terrible ending. Trust me when I say that this drama will only end up being 50 hours of your life wasted. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either a die-hard Im Sung Han fan or being paid by someone to do so.
